Get those Census forms in

C’mon people. We can do better than this.

A week after most Americans received their 2010 Census forms, return rates in many urban areas such as Houston and Harris County are lagging behind those in rural communities, the Census Bureau reported Wednesday.

The bureau launched an interactive online mapping tool that enables the public to see the rates for their communities. As of late Wednesday, 8 percent of Houston households and 9 percent of those in Harris County who received the forms had returned them in the mail, behind the national rate of 20 percent.

The Texas return rate was 12 percent. Some sparsely populated counties in Central and West Texas reported rates greater than 20 percent, while those in urban counties around Dallas, San Antonio and Austin hovered around 12 percent. Counties encompassing Manhattan and Brooklyn, N.Y., each showed 11 percent return rates.

I’m sure the Houston/Harris rates will come up soon enough. But please, if you haven’t sent yours in yet, do it soon.
