Friday random twelve: My worst songs

Having spent so much time talking about the songs I own that are on various Best Songs lists, how about a list of Worst Songs, courtesy of the AOL Radio Blog? This list goes to twelve because that’s how many of them I have on this list of 100 songs.

1. You’re Beautiful – James Blunt
2. Cotton-Eyed Joe – The MOB (Rednex)
3. Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree – Modern Barbershop Quartet (Tony Orlando and Dawn)
4. Do They Know It’s Christmas – Band-Aid
5. Puttin’ On The Ritz – Taco
6. Love Will Keep Us Together – Captain and Tennille
7. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers
8. I Touch Myself – The Divinyls
9. We Didn’t Start The Fire – Billy Joel
10. I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) – Meat Loaf
11. Tubthumping – Chumbawamba
12. One Week – Barenaked Ladies

If some of these tunes seem familiar, it’s because three of them appeared on this list of annoying songs that I had noted before. Indeed, there’s quite a bit of overlap between those two lists. As for this one, putting aside the usual subjective nature of these things, what strikes me is how little overlap there is with the Dave Barry list, the reason being that Barry’s sample largely drew from the 50s to the 70s, while this list is heavy on songs from the 80s forward. (Special props to “Sometimes When We Touch”, by Dan Hill, and “I’m Too Sexy”, by Right Said Fred, for making both lists.) Beyond that, beauty and ugly is in the ear of the listener, so I’m not going to argue with any of these inclusions, even though I disagree with the ones above. I’m not ashamed of anything I have in my collection. What are your worst songs?

What?! You’re pretending that you don’t have a copy of Escape on an 8-track somewhere?

I’ve got to give them full props for “Anything for Love” — yet another reminder that actors should not pretend to be rock stars….

  2. I have it on CD, actually, but as none of those songs made the AOL list, they get a pass here. Don’t stop believing…

  3. Pingback: Saturday video break: Ketchup – Off the Kuff

I think we have the same bad taste, at least according to the critics.
