We’ll always have Shipley’s

As a regular eater of their product, I meant to link to this story about Shipley’s Donuts’ 70th anniversary earlier, but fortunately Lair and Houstonist were on task. Don’t really have much to add to it other than of late I’ve started noticing the familiar red-striped boxes at work again. I guess when all else fails, you return to your roots.

    Didn’t realize that Shipley’s was a Houston-based chain.

The certainly own the doughnut market here in Waco. I looked in the phone book and there are 8 local franchises in the Waco area. That’s more Shipleys than we have McDonalds.

They have every single route into town covered. It’s impossible to commute into Waco from any direction without passing a Shipley’s.

If only they would work on their coffee I would be happy. That’s where both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts has them beat. Frankly I think McDonalds has better coffee than Shipley’s. And there’s no excuse for bad coffee at a donut shop, none. Well, it’s not really BAD coffee, it’s drinkable. It’s just not as good as it could be if they put an effort into getting the best fresh beans and brewing it properly.

  2. Sadly, I didn’t get any Shipley’s while I was home last week. I almost never eat donuts any more because what I can get up here, Krispy Kreme included, simply isn’t as good.

Why oh why can’t there be a Shipley’s Donuts in Austin? I’ve been thwarted every time I try to get them during visits to other cities too. It’s one of the very few things that makes me miss my home town of College Station.

  4. I agree wholeheartedly. I grew up on Shipley’s Donuts and the only time I can get them is when I go home to Houston and stop at the one off 290 or when I go to San Antonio and stop off in San Marcos. I am sure that there are plenty of good places where they wont drown out the love of most Austinites for Krispy Kreme, but I would drive to any distance in Austin just to have my Shipley’s.

And that is my take on it….
