We’re going to have a lot of voters in Harris County this year, and they will all have one thing in common:
The number of registered voters in Harris County is expected to hit a record high before the November election, but people have been registering at a slower pace than past years, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt said Monday.
The number of registered voters in the county is expected to top 2 million, exceeding the record of 1.9 million in 2000, said Bettencourt, who also is the county voter registrar.
“We will clearly set a record this year,” he said. “It depends on people’s interest in the presidential election.”
Bettencourt got the registration process under way at the downtown post office Monday, mailing more than 1.5 million voter registration cards. The mailed cards replace two-year-old registrations that expired Monday.
Voters are required to show the cards or another form of identification before casting ballots.
Yes, every single registered voter in Harris County will be receiving an official Voter ID card in the mail shortly. They must produce this Voter ID card when they show up at the ballot box, or a suitable alternative to it, such as a driver’s license. Just something to keep in mind the next time you hear a Republican elected official or candidate talk about the need for Voter ID legislation.
