Friday random ten: The top 500, part 5

Continuing on with the songs in my collection from the Rolling Stone Top 500 list.

1. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) – Stevie Ray Vaughan (#101, orig. Jimi Hendrix)
2. Hot Stuff – Donna Summer (#103)
3. The Boxer – Simon & Garfunkel (#105)
4. Not Fade Away – Trout Fishing In America (#107, orig. Buddy Holly)
5. Little Red Corvette – Big Daddy (#108, orig. Prince)
6. Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison (#109)
7. I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry – Johnny Cash (#111, orig. Hank Williams)
8. Honky Tonk Women – Ike & Tina Turner (#116, orig. Rolling Stones)
9. Take Me To The River – Talking Heads/Annie Lennox (#117, orig. Al Green)
10. Shout – The MOB/The Beatles (#118, orig. The Isley Brothers)

Steve Allen apparently once did a dramatic reading of “Hot Stuff” on his TV show, which I’m told was hilarious. Alas, I cannot find it on YouTube, but here’s him doing another such reading from years before, so you can get the flavor of it. The Isley Brothers may have done the original version of “Shout” but let’s be honest, the canonical version is the Otis Day and the Knights version. Ask me sometime about performing “Shout” at Notre Dame with the MOB in 1988. I used to have The Commitments’ version of Take Me To The River, which is quite different than the Talking Heads and Annie Lennox versions, but I don’t have it any more – the CD may have belonged to my then-roomie Matt and went with him when he moved out.

Entire song list report: Started with “She’s Not You”, by Elvis Presley. Finished with “Sleepwalk”, by the Brian Setzer Orchestra, song #4743. That meant a lot of “Silent Nights” in between, and a total of 118 tunes for the week. Enjoy your last shopping weekend before Christmas!

I can still hear the ND fans booing their own band when they didn’t gator.
