That’s a question that the House Redistricting Committee will be studying next week.
The Committee will meet in a public hearing to hear testimony on the following interim charge:
“Study State Board of Education districts to determine whether the size of the districts inhibits the ability of board members to provide representation to their constituents and whether a change to the number of districts or the makeup of the board would enhance the ability of the board to perform its duties.”
The 15 SBOE districts are nearly 2 1/2 times the size of the 36 Congressional districts, so I’d have to say that the answer is a resounding Yes, they’re too damn big. The real question, as I’ve asked before, is why do we need goegraphically-based SBOE districts at all? I don’t get what purpose that serves given the mission of the SBOE, and as such I don’t see how increasing the size of the SBOE will accomplish anything. But what do I know? We’ll see what the committee has to say.
