Song #51 on the Popdose Top 100 Covers list is “Summertime Blues”, originally by Eddie Cochran and covered by The Who. Here’s the original:
Just a classic song, one every bar band in the country knows. I don’t know offhand what version of this I hear on the radio – it sounds mostly like this one, but I have a hard time imagining a classic rock station reaching back to the 50’s. But maybe I’m wrong – a YouTube search of “Summertime Blues” didn’t turn up any obvious candidates. Anyway, here’s The Who:
I don’t think it had ever occurred to me that it was John Entwhistle doing the “I’d like to help you, son, but you’re too young to vote” bits. In retrospect it’s obvious, since that sure ain’t Pete Townshend’s voice, I’d just never really thought about it. What’s your favorite version of this song?
I’m partial to this one myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU5uDozoSSM
