Houston police conducted a massive raid on a K-Mart parking lot on Saturday night, arresting over 400 teenagers who were supposedly loitering.
(Do I really need to make the obvious Martha Stewart jokes here? Talk amongst yourselves.)
I don’t have any idea if there was merit to the complaints by nearby businesses that these kids were “causing a commotion” or not. What I do know is that this seems like an awful lot of police to throw at a bunch of alleged misdemeanors. What in the name of Sam Walton is going on here?
Apparently, it’s okay to tailgate for the Texans game, but not tailgate after a good KMart shopping experience.
I think KMart, the nearby Sam’s or WalMart, or the AMC30 ought to take note and find a way to make a buck off these kids. Put up an under-18 club or something.
I’m not sure what to make of this. On one hand, the tactics are unnerving, to say the least. Ticketing every young person in the parking lot in jail for misdemeanor tresspassing? Don’t they usually just give out tickets for that (unless they have a specific reason to take them downtown)?
On the other hand, that’s A LOT of people. There was probably a lot more going on here than meets the eye.
Whitlock
That is a lot of people, some of which can be explained by the Sonic nearby. I’ve no doubt that some of those folks shouldn’t have been there, though. That said, it sure seems like a lot of bystanders got swept up, and that can’t be a good thing.
