Friday random ten: Revisiting the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs list, part 8

Here’s their list.

1. Train In Vain – Annie Lennox (orig. The Clasg, #298)
2. She’s Not There – The Zombies (#297)
3. Can’t Buy Me Love – The Beatles (#295; also a cover by The Lager Rhythms)
4. Money (That’s What I Want) – The Beatles (orig. Barrett Strong, #294)
5. Walk This Way – Aerosmith (Run/DMC cover, #293)
6. (What’s So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding – Lucy Kaplansky (orig. Nick Lowe/Brinsley Schwartz, featured cover by Elvia Costello and The Attractions, #290)
7. Chapel of Love – The Beach Boys (orig. The Dixie Cups, #284)
8. I’ll Take You There – The Staple Singers (#281)
9. Born In The USA – Bruce Springsteen (#280)
10. Sloop John B – The Beach Boys (#276; also a cover by The Lager Rhythms)

Song I used to have but don’t any more: “Black Dog”, Led Zeppelin (#300). Bought it on vinyl in college and taped it on cassette, but both got lost somewhere along the line.
Song the girls would probably like if I played it for them: “Call Me”, Blondie (#289). What’s not to like?
Song I don’t have but probably should: “Seven Nation Army”, The White Stripes (#286). I have plenty of popular music from past decades. I should have some from more recent decades.
Song I have no information on: “Somebody To Love”, Jefferson Airplane (#279). Seriously, it’s just the music file, with no apparent metadata. Not sure if this is a function of my recent hard drive crash, or if it was always this way and I just never noticed. I may have to get one of those music-identifying apps and play it for that so I can figure out who this is by.

To be clear, it’s the Run/DMC version of “Walk This Way” that’s on the list, but all I have is the original Aerosmith version. Elvis Costello’s version of “What’s So Funny…” is on the list; this was a cover of Nick Lowe, and what I have is a cover by Lucy Kaplansky. Capiche? Oddly, I don’t have the album version of “Born In The USA”, just the version from the five-album 1975-1985 live set, and the version from “Tracks”. My collection can be a bit weird sometimes.

What information about “Somebody to Love” do you lack if you have the title, the band and the datafile? I’m confused.

  5. Linkmeister – All I have is the title and the file. The band name comes from the list, which is why I commented on it here. I don’t know whose version of the song I have.
