We move over to HISD Trustee races, which I’ll be running this week. There are four Trustee seats that are up for election this cycle, and I have interviews with a total of five candidates in them. First up is Rhonda Skillern-Jones, who currently serves as Board President and who is running for her first re-election. A mother of five children who have all attended HISD schools, Skillern-Jones was a longtime volunteer and activist in the schools, having served as PTA President and on various HISD committees such as the Superintendent’s Parents Advisory Committee and Budget Advisory Committee. She led the push to rename HISD schools that were named for Confederate soldiers and leaders. Please note that there is an addendum to the interview that appears below, so be sure to click on it after you listen to my conversation with Rhonda Skillern-Jones:
All interviews from this point forward have been conducted after the Supreme Court ruling on HERO, and I have been asking everyone about their position on it. As noted above, after the interview was concluded, Ms. Skillern-Jones called me to say she would like to add to her answer to my question regarding HERO. She sent me an audio file, which you should be able to listen to here, with her additional remarks. The file itself is here in case there’s any problem with the link above.
(Note: All HISD candidate interviews took place before Superintendent Terry Grier announced his resignation.)
You can see all of my interviews as well as finance reports and other information on candidates on my 2015 Election page.
