Dallas

I don’t have anything insightful to say about the horrible events of the past few days – the police officers in Dallas, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and so many others before them. I started talking to my 12-year-old Olivia about Philando Castile on Thursday, and I told her I don’t have much faith that people my age or older are going to figure this out. I fear it’s one of many problems we’re going to leave for her cohort to solve. I don’t have much to say because honestly I think the best thing I can do is listen and try to learn. Here’s one place to start. May we all find our way towards peace and justice.

    Good Post. Agreed.

    I’m wondering if the 2nd Amendment community is finally, belatedly, beginning to perceive its common ground with the minority communities that are routinely subjected to policing procedures that are less frequently imposed on the white community (I’m leaving class issues out for the sake of brevity). By every metric, Philando Castile was emblematic of what they advocate: an upstanding citizen exercising his right to carry a weapon. That he happened to be black and apparently was summarily executed by a law officer should shout to our conservative brethren that maybe there IS a problem. I’m hopeful, but not holding my breath. I’m also hoping that BLM will come to grips with the fact that they have a fundamental communication issue going on with other communities that is alienating potential allies. Again, not holding my breath.

    @Voter:

    The problem with the Castile narrative put out by the girlfriend, is that there were glaring factual errors that virtually no one is talking about. When she said, he’s got a CHL, I thought, “gee, that could be me.” The problem is, the sheriff where he lived never issued him a CHL. He had a whole slew of misdemeanor offenses, most of them traffic related, lie driving on a suspended license. I don’t know if that precluded him from getting a CHL, but again, the guy responsible for issuing one says he never applied for one.

    Factual error 2: the girlfriend says they were pulled over for a “busted tail light.”
    Again, that had me thinking, “gee, that could be me.” The problem, though, is the radio communication by the cop makes it clear he is pulling them over because Castile matched the description of an armed robbery suspect at a store less than 4 blocks away, a few days earlier. Finally, in the girlfriend’s video, we can see what looks like a gun, in his lap, by his thigh, which corresponds both to the cop’s saying, “I told him not to reach for it,” and his admonition to the girlfriend not to move toward the gun.

    What I do know is, I don’t have enough information to make a decision about what happened, one way or the other. I do know that I don’t trust “Diamond’s” version of the events, since she already mislead the public twice.

    Source: conservative treehouse.

    Did he have a body cam?

    @Bill. I have not heard anything you just said. Did you hear this from any mainstream sources that are not conservative? Before we believe anything we should know if the source has a bias. But lets look at your claims logically. If he was matched the description of an armed robbery suspect then that cop would have pulled him over and waited for backup. He would not have approached the car alone. That is not proper police procedure. He was not pulled over because he fit a description. When the tape starts the cop is saying he said something the girlfriend is saying he did not. Listen to his voice he did not sound convinced he sounded scared, he knows he messed up when he shot him.
    Now to your other claim. Having misdemeanors does not stop you from having a conceal license (in Texas an affirmative finding for family violence does but only that misdemeanor). He can get as many driving while licenses suspended and no insurance tickets as he can get he still has his second amendment right. I do not know for a fact that he did not have his licence to carry and neither do you. What you quoted is from a website with an agenda. If it was true the major news networks would have already broadcast that information.
    And this Bill is the problem with America. You quickly spread information without looking at everything from a neutral point of view. From a black man it is true we are treated differently in this country. It is true that we are suspected of being a criminal or a thug in situations where our white countrymen would not. And this is what we want to stop. We only want to be treated as a white person would. We want to be able to handle a situation with law enforcement that does not evolve guns. In the case we are talking about the officer pulled his gun on a normal traffic stop. That is not normal procedure. I am sure you bill have not had a gun pulled on you. But Bill I have been pulled over put on the side of the road and in handcuffs then released when the cops could not find anything. I have had cops look through my trunk and sniff my stuff and when I asked them what they are doing they refuse to answer. Two separate situations. Trust me things are not the same. And all we want is to be treated the same.

    CNN allowed people in Ferguson to spread lies they later recanted when questioned by DOJ investigators. Mainstream outlets are just as guilty. Let’s see what the story turns out to actually be. It is a tragedy for sure, but we should all withhold judgement. Having said that, it doesn’t make sense he would pull a gun over a traffic ticket considering how many he previously received.
