John Cornyn withdrew from consideration to be the next FBI director on Tuesday, saying the “best way I can serve is continuing to fight for a conservative agenda in the U.S. Senate.”
“Now more than ever the country needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI director,” he said in a statement. “I’ve informed the administration that I’m committed to helping them find such an individual.”
Cornyn was in serious contention to replace ousted FBI director James Comey, setting off a scramble and speculation around the state over who might succeed him in the U.S. Senate.

In a different time it might have made sense, but given everything that’s going on now, the only winning move is not to play. It would have been nice to have had more time to indulge in wild speculation about who might get appointed and who might run for that seat, but all good things must come to an end. He was a useless AG (“sorry, can’t help you with that bottom feeder credit card company that threatened arrest and garnishment for the fraudulent credit card account someone stole your identity for”– illegal in Texas for unsecured debt even then), has been a useless senator and was absolutely stunned his name came up, although his early support of Trump during the campaign would have made him a shoo-in.
So now former Senator Joe Lieberman is rumored to be a front runner. While it’s true he’d be perceived by many as having less partisan bias than Cornyn, he’s got some pretty big gaps in the CV. All the recent FBI directors have had experience being FBI agents and/or judges and/or state/federal prosecutors.
Just read that Joe works for one of the law firms representing Trump. Bit of COI there, me thinks.
