“They know what is wrong with Donald Trump. They know why it’s dangerous. They understand—or most of them do—the damage he can do to a system of governance that relies to a surprising degree on norms rather than rules, and whose vulnerability has been newly exposed.”
These past couple years have opened my eyes to how many “gentleman’s agreements” we all used to count on for our government to function. Of course all Presidential nominees released their tax returns and divested themselves of financial affairs that could cause conflict of interest upon taking office. Of course, qualified SCOTUS nominees got a hearing and a vote (even if that vote was “no”) in a timely manner. Of course no President would be asking people in the Justice Dept. for personal loyalty, and no member of Congress would stand for it if it did happen. If we are lucky enough to get out of this mess without fatal damage to our republic, then it’s high time to convert some of these norms to rules, as we see that there are too many people flouting them.
