Elections do have consequences.
The U.S. House’s main investigative committee has opened an inquiry into the Texas secretary of state’s review of the voter rolls for supposed noncitizens.
In letters sent to top Texas officials on Thursday, U.S. Reps. Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Jamie Raskin, D-Maryland, requested documents and communications from the secretary of state and the state’s attorney general related to the review through which state officials tagged almost 100,000 registered voters as suspect voters.
Texas officials rolled out the review effort in late January, shipping off lists of flagged voters to county voter registrars in what they described as routine maintenance of the state’s massive voter registration database. But state officials’ efforts have been dogged by errors in the data and litigation in federal court, which ground the entire review to a halt over concerns by a federal judge that it targeted naturalized citizens.
“We are disturbed by reports that your office has taken steps to remove thousands of eligible American voters from the rolls in Texas and that you have referred many of these Americans for possible criminal prosecution for exercising their right to vote,” the congressmen wrote to Secretary of State David Whitley.

In their letters, Cummings and Raskin — who chairs a subcommittee on civil rights and civil liberties — cited their authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under the rules of the U.S. House of Representatives. Noting they’ve examined state voting issues in the past, they requested all sorts of communications between state agencies involved in the review, as well as any communications with Trump administration officials.
You can see a copy of the letter here. I look forward to seeing what this turns up, as I’m quite certain that there are things we do not yet know about this fiasco. Whitley should expect some sharper questions, though he will have some supporters as well, as the committee includes Reps. Michael Cloud and Chip Roy, who is a minion of both Ted Cruz and Ken Paxton. The DMN, the Observer, and the Chron have more.
Good. Shine the sunlight on these dishonest germs. That’s what I voted for last year and will vote for again next year.
So Charles, can you see any reason the TX GOP hasn’t kicked Whitley to the curb, other than the GOP’s new normal in increased hypocrisy and tolerance for incompetence?
Let’s not forget their aversion to sunlight. If a new SoS is appointed while the Lege is in session, he or she will also go through a confirmation process, with all the bothersome public disclosure that entails. Once the clock runs out the hack of Abbott’s choice can quietly take office without any public vetting.
I see, it’s a page out of McConnell’s scummy playbook- we’ll get what we want without oversight by refusing to vote on nominees. There’s a thing ripe for reform on the state and federal level- there should be a provision that a Senate MUST vote on a nominee within a defined time frame (long enough for vetting).
Hey Fly,
Cocaine Mitch DID allow a vote on the green new deal. Funny how all the people promoting it wouldn’t actually vote for it.
Also, while we are investigating bogus things, I hope we will get serious about finding out exactly WHY we wasted 2 years and tens of millions of dollars investigating the bogus collusion delusion, recently debunked.
Unless you’re read the entire Mueller report, you are lying.
If Barr lied, seems like that would be slam dunk for perjury, lying on a government document. Really easy to prove. Did he copy that sentence word for word from Mueller’s report or not?
Is this really what you are hanging your hat on now? Maybe it’s time to just admit that you got played, played by Team Hillary, played by the complicit media, played by Adam Schiff and everyone else who had super secret info that Trump and Russia colluded, etc. Or hey, just go down with the ship. Don’t stop believin’, amirite?
Bill, Bar is a lawyer and he chose he words closely. As Clinton stated it all depends on what the definition of Is is.
Bill you are not dumb, you are a party animal that prefers that your party win, because your allegiance is to that party rather than this country.
People like you are destroying this country, whether willing or not doing exactly what Putin expects from people like you.
Manny,
You won’t be satisfied until every last person from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Somalia, and other totally NOT shithole countries are here.
I get that you feel like the country is not OK until that is completed. It is a conflict of ideologies, just like we have with Islam, and again you and I are on opposite sides.
The ironic thing is, you benefit from our side at least trying to stave off disaster. Your idyllic new America will collapse under the weight of all those millions of 3rd World mouths we will have to feed.
You can either have a welfare state, or you can have open borders, but you can’t have both at the same time.
On a semi-different note…
I’m getting pretty tired of Central American immigrants forming groups and walking, en masse, towards the US Border in the hopes of breaching the fence and gaining citizenship by virtue of stepping on US soil (yes, I know there’s a whole ‘apply for asylum’ thing going on), but not because I’m concerned with mouths to feed or places to house them, but because we’re a nation of laws, and it appears these groups aren’t too concerned about this Nation’s laws when it comes to LEGAL immigration. If Manny (or anyone else) is okay with Illegal immigration, then Manny (and everyone else) should outfit his/their backyard with Kelty tents, Port-A-Cans, and gallons of bottled water and let them live out back….then report back in 60 days how it’s going.
C.L.
LOL, the starched white shirt and wearing guys would like to have a word with you.
You ARE being replaced, and you’re racist if you have the audacity to actually say it.
